Oxaloacetate in PMDD Treatment?

What is PMDD?
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects millions of people worldwide. It refers to a collection of cyclical symptoms that occur in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, about 1-2 weeks before menstruation, and resolve once bleeding begins. PMDD involves a mix of physical and emotional symptoms that occur before menstruation. Common symptoms include:
Physical: Bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, food cravings, abdominal pain, nausea, and swelling.
Emotional/Behavioral: Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, depression, anger, confusion, and social withdrawal.
The exact cause of PMDD remains unclear, but based on the information we currently have, it likely involves an increased sensitivity to the typical hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle. The fluctuations of these hormones (estrogen and progesterone) can influence neurotransmitters (think: chemical messengers of the brain), particularly those that regulate mood and emotional responses.
Treatment for PMDD focuses on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life. Typical treatments are antidepressant medications, such as SSRIs, and in some cases, hormonal therapy. Certain nutrients (calcium, magnesium, B6) and lifestyle modifications can offer some support, but more recently there has been a new option showing promising results: oxaloacetate.
What is Oxaloacetate?
Oxaloacetate is a naturally occurring molecule that has a role in the body's energy production cycles. It helps to convert nutrients into usable energy. Along with these metabolic functions, it has also shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Recent studies and reports suggest oxaloacetate supplementation may reduce PMDD symptoms. Here's how it might work:
Reducing Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress refers to damage done to cells (including brain cells) by harmful free radicals. This cell damage can worsen mood disorders like PMDD. Oxaloacetate's antioxidant activity can help neutralize these free radicals and protect brain cells.
Neurotransmitter Modulation
Oxaloacetate can influence some of the neurotransmitters we discussed above, specifically glutamate (excitatory) and GABA (inhibitory/relaxing). Oxaloacetate can support balance between them, which may reduce mood instability, anxiety, and irritability common in PMDD.
Supporting Energy Metabolism in the Brain
Brain cells require constant energy supply to properly function. Like we discussed above, oxaloacetate plays a role in converting nutrients to usable energy. Improved energy metabolism = stabilized mood and improved cognitive function during the luteal phase.
Anti-Inflammatory Benefits
Inflammation in the brain can significantly contribute to mood disorders and symptoms such as depression and fatigue. Oxaloacetate's anti-inflammatory properties may reduce this inflammation, and thus, these symptoms.
The data we currently have regarding oxaloacetate for PMDD is limited and more human studies are needed to fully understand the mechanism of action, but current data shows promising results for oxaloacetate as a potential adjunctive treatment. Oxaloacetate, stabilized with vitamin C, is currently available through two major products - Benagene and Jubilance. You can find it via Fullscript(as Benagene), or directly through Benagene or Jubilance.
